What is a Fifth-Wheel?

Originally, a fifth wheel was a steering mechanism resembling a wheel that enabled the front axle of a horse-drawn wagon to rotate when making turns. Around 1910, John C. Endebrock invented a device for coupling trailers to motor vehicles. In its initial use, trailers were towed by Ford Model "T" passenger cars. This coupling scheme required three Men to hook to and unhook the trailer from the automobile. In 1918, Endebrock designed a new coupling devise that allowed a single driver to easily connect the tractor and the trailer. The new fifth wheel design used a jaw with a spring locking device mounted on the fifth wheel plate that was attached to the tractor frame.

Today, the fifth wheel serves as a coupling device that attaches a road tractor to a semi-trailer. A fifth wheel is a heavy metal disc with a "V" shaped slot. It is attached horizontally to the chassis above the rear axles of the road tractor. The "V" slot is located at the rear and it contains a locking device. The fifth wheel mechanism used to connect tractors and trailers today is very similar to Endebrock's design from the early twentieth century.

What is a Kingpin?

A kingpin is a heavy metal cylindrical pin that is located underneath the front end of the trailer. The kingpin is the mechanism on the trailer that locks it to a road tractor. It is typically positioned between 18" to 48" from the trailer nose. A greased metal grid plate surrounds the kingpin. This grid plate allows the fifth wheel to slide underneath the trailer. When the tractor is backed into the nose of a trailer, the fifth wheel pivots and slides underneath the trailer's grid plate. The fifth wheel then locks onto the trailer's king pin.

When coupled to the kingpin, the fifth wheel enables the semi trailer to rotate at the point where the fifth wheel and kingpin are joined. The rotating attachment allows the tractor-trailer combination to make turns and provides stability and maneuverability on the road. When the load is delivered, the driver disconnects the tractor from the trailer by rolling down the trailer's Dolly legs. He then pulls a lever to disengage the fifth wheel locking mechanism and drives the tractor away from the trailer.

Because they're bulky, often dirty, need lots of careful cleaning and sometimes repAirs, most typewriters, old and modern, are overlooked and fetched low prices at local offline auction houses.

Despite this, anyone prepared to spend time cleaning, researching, repAiring and eventually packing a typewriter, will find ready bidders on eBay in both the UK and us, and no doubt other country sites, too.

Typewriters don't always fetch fabulous prices, but most early typewriters, from the late 1800s and early 1900s rarely go unsold on eBay so you're almost always going tomake money.

Recent eBay prices range from £ 73 for an early Empire Typewriter from 1892, to £380 for a Standard Victorian Typewriter in Salter original tin carry case. More unusual typewriter types attract premium prices, such as a Braille typewriter that went for £142 and an early double keyboard model that fetched £127.

Outside of eBay some far higher prices have been achieved for very early and unusual typewriter models which are worth remembering at buying expeditions. For example, at Sotheby's in Merritt typewriter from 1895 went for £715 some years ago, and at Koln in Germany The Auction Team valued a rare Imperial Typewriter, one of only three known to exist, at between £7,000 and £8,000.

Since the first successfulcommercial typewriters were introduced in the late 1860s many unusual designs have emerged, some plain and simple, others stunningly intricate and detailed. One of the simplest and earliest designs had a wheel with letters round the edge which was turned manually until the required letter appeared in front of the paper and was pushed to form an impression.

More complicated typewriters had double keyboards, one for lower case, the other for capitals, and were created in brass and mother of pearl hand painted with glorious gilded leaves and flowers. These are the kind of unusual models to Watch out for at non-specialist auctions and they're almost certain to attract high prices on eBay.

These early models sometimes crop up at specialist typewriter auctions where they invariably fetch a high price. Not the place to buy in expectation of high resell fees on eBay but worth visiting for research and experience.

Like most collectibles, value depends mainly on rarity, not just age. For example, one of the earliest serviceable, the Underwood typewriters, created from 1900 to 1932 was made in the millions and can still be found in working condition, consequently they are worth very little.

Tips

* There are no catalogues or price guides for old typewriters such as those you'll find updated annually for postcards and stamps, coins and ceramics. There simply aren't enough collectors, or typewriters, to warrant special listings. Value, like many low volume collectibles is best determined at auction, and is the point wherethe price someone is willing to pay matches what the current owner will accept. By far the highest prices are paid for typewriters in good, clean, working condition, with or without restoration work.

* You should clean typewriters carefully, getting right into the tiniest of grooves without causing damage to keys which were often long and spindly and unexpectedly delicate. * Best places to buy are at general auction or from long established office equipMent stores, but rarely will you get a bargain from antiques and second hand dealers who invariably think old means valuable, for most items, and often they are wrong.

* This is one of those collectibles you really need to study and learn what makes one older item worthless and a more modern type quite valuable. Web sites and bookslisted later provide much useful information. Choose one or both of those books Mentioned later, they're packed with pictures, and keep them close by on buying days.

* Don 't expect to make more than fifty pounds or so on most early typewriters, but remember you can pick them up very cheaply indeed, I've seen them fetch less than a tenner at local auction. The trick to making money is to buy typewriters in good condition, but dirty, and spend time cleaning them up and taking several great photographs to display them from all angles for listing on eBay.

The Basics
Wood is hard or soft. When I say hard, I mean that the wood is dense, whereas, a soft wood is supple. A good trick to tell the difference between hard and soft wood is that if you press your doesn't increase into a soft wood such as pine, it leaves an indentation. But, this does not happen with a hard wood such as oak.

Wood is coarse-grain or close-grain. In coarse-grain wood, the age rings in the wood are getting to part, giving it an unevenappearance. In close-grain woods, the age rings in the wood are very close together, giving it a smooth, delicate appearance.

Sometimes, wood is stained. Lighter woods such as oak, elm and maple can be stained to resemble a darker mahogany or rosewood.

Some woods (mahogany, rosewood, burl walnut) are perceived to be more valuable than other woods (elm, maple, spruce). The reason for this is availability. Woods that need to be imported are more expensive than home-grown woods. Woods that are abundant proteins are not as expensive as woods that are scarce.

Oak
Oak is a coarse-grain hard wood found in Europe and North America. Starting in 17th century Europe, oak was used to make furniture found throughout the home. There are several varieties, including red oak and whiteoak. Young oak is pale in color. But, over time and with polishing, oak darkens into a rich brown color.

Mahogany
Mahogany is a close-grain hard wood native to northern and central South America and the West Indies. Mahogany was a popular choice in England during the mid-18th century for fine furniture making. It is a dark red color sometimes, however, it is dark brown. Red mahogany is found in the West Indies and brown mahogany is native to South America. Mahogany furniture continues to be desirable today.

Rosewood
Rosewood is a close-grain hard wood indigenous to India, South America and the West Indies. Rosewood is named for the rose scent that releases when it is cut. Occasionally, I find that people confuse rosewood and mahogany. Both woods can bered in color. However, when you look closely at rosewood, you'll see the end black (and sometimes white) rings that are not present in mahogany. Another trick to tell if an item is rosewood is to pick it up. Rosewood is a very heavy , heavier than mahogany wood. In the 17th century China, rosewood was a popular choice for fine furniture makers. As well, in 19th century Europe, it was used to construct better-quality furniture for fine homes.

Walnut
Walnut is close-grain hard wood found in Europe and North America. The color varies from light to very rich golden brown color and it is not uncommon to find walnut stained to look like mahogany. Sometimes, disease leads to the unexpected. Burl walnut, the most prized form of walnut, results from a disease that attacksthe tree causing a beautiful scrolled, close grain. These days you see the look of burl walnut replicated in the plastic interiors of some higher end cars.

Pine
Pine is a soft wood blades, knotted with a wide, straight grain. It grows in Europe and North America. Pine was often used in furniture intended to be painted. Everyday furniture-kitchen tables and chAirs-were often made from pine.

Maple & Elm
Maple and elm are coarse-grain hard woods found in North America and Europe. They were frequently used in utilitarian furniture. Often a veneer of a finer wood was applied to these woods.

Veneers
Veneering is a technique where a very thin sheet of a more expensive wood is glued to a less expensive wood. Using less expensive woods suchas elm and maple and adding a more expensive mahogany or walnut veneer allowed furniture makers to provide furniture that was affordable for a larger clientele. You may hear an antique dealer say; "This table is walnut on maple." The dealer means that the item has a walnut veneer and underneath the actual item is maple. In walnut on maple table is less valuable than a solid walnut table.

How do you tell if your furniture is veneered? Look at the edges of the piece. If you see what appears to be a seam, it is veneered. On the other hand, if the edges of the piece are seamless, it is solid.

From the Early 17th century veneers were hand-cut, so they could be uneven. But, in the 19th century veneers started to be cut by machine. This allowed the veneers to be cut very thin andeven. Depending on the way the wood is cut, veneering produces different effects. Butterfly occurs when two opposing veneering end grain veneers are diagonally cut from a branch. They are applied to mirror each other.

Marquetry Parquetry Inlay//
Marquetry is a technique where various kinds of wood are applied to a surface to produce a picture. Flowers and birds were often the subjects. Exotic woods such as ebony and satinwood, tulipwood were frequently employed.

The difference between marquetry and parquetry is the subject matter. Parquetry is a veneer that uses geometric patterns. Nowadays, you see it in parquet hardwood floors and ornate chess and backgammon boards.

Inlay is a decorative treatMent where materials other than wood are cut into a design. Inlayswere often made of bone, ivory, mother of pearl, brass, tortoise shell. Parquetry and Marquetry, inlay first appeared during the Italian Renaissance.

Gilding
Gilding is a technique wherein gold leaf is applied with plaster (plaster-like substance) to wood. It is highly decorative and was popular during the Italian Renaissance and the Louis period in France.

This factor is significant as turbocharged engines are designed differently from non-turbocharged engines. Most importantly, parts may not be interchanged between these two kinds ofengines.

The last set of six (6) numbers is the sequential number of the engines as it comes off the assembly line. If this number is 123456, then the next serial number of the next engine on the same assembly line will be 123457. This will continue until John Deere decides its time to upgrade or to build another model.

There are many variations of the above serial number. The model 4045T can be marked 4045D. Here the "D" symbolizes that the engine is a diesel engine (some early John Deere's were manufactured to operate on gas), and that's it's naturally aspirated, i.e., it's not turbocharged. Thus, this serial number could have been TO4045D123456 and this would have been totally different from the TO4045T123456.

The serial numbers on 4045 can also be 3152,, 3179, 31643029, 4202, 4219, 4239, 4039, 4276, 6303, 6329, 6059, 6068, 6414, 6414, 4270, 6404, 6466, or 6076. They can be followed by a "D", "T" or a "H."

The issue of how to identify which engines are PowerTech and which are not non-PowerTech often arises. This can be solved by further dissecting the John Deere serial number.

For the engines made in Dubuque, Iowa, USA (Engines) all engines with a sequence number more than 700.000 are all Powertech engines.

For the engines made in Sarran, France, (engines) all engines with serial number sequence more than 500.000 are all Powertech engines.
